Having just spent the last two weeks photographing five of the nine islands that make up the Azores in the mid Atlantic, I can safely say it is a truely fantastic place to visit and photograph.
The island of Flores was simply beautiful with stunning green waterfalls 200 feet high and deep volcanic craters, every angle of these tiny island is a stunning photoraph, whats more its so inaccessable very few tourists have yet to discover it making feel even more like a lost gem in the vast Atlantic ocean. Its neighbouring island of Corvo is the smallest island in the archipelago with only one town of a few hundred people, until only very recently before the air strip was bult the island would be cut of fom the rest of the world for months on end during the winter, even now it can still be cut off for several weeks at a time.
When we attampyted to land on the island of Flores which was being ravaged by torrential rain and fierce cross winds, our pilots had had to make 5 attempted landings before successfully touching down on the very short water logged, down hill runway. After the first few attempts I decided to film the landing on my IPhone, from the clip you will see how bad the visibility is as he approaches the sheer cliff top to find the beginning of the runway.
